Bessie was a woman of many talents, especially those involving needle and thread.  Overnight guests dreamed upon pillowcases edged with exquisite embroidery.  Cutwork linens graced the dinner table, and matching napkins rested in laps.  A basket, overflowing with embroidery and other needlework, always resided next to Bessie's rocker.  Bessie was my grandmother.

Mary was also well skilled in the art of stitching.  Delicate baby gowns, delightful dresses, fun play clothes, cuddly nightgowns and robes, prom dresses, and wedding trousseaus were lovingly created by Mary and her sewing machine.  Most importantly, she shared this love of sewing with students, through her many years as a Home Economics teacher, and those fortunate enough to receive her special handmade gifts.  Mary was my mother.

Both of these women taught me to sew and embroider at a very tender age.  However, as a wife and mother, my sewing machine was pushed farther and farther into the dark recesses of the closet.  A young son, carpool, school activities, home renovation and decoration, community volunteer projects and social events vied for my attention and time.  Sewing was reserved for replacing a lost button, repairing a ripped seam, mending a worn knee in little navy school uniform pants or quickly whipping up a crazy costume!

Then, within just months of each other, Bessie and Mary earned their wings -- Bessie, after a long and full life; Mary, after a four year battle with ovarian cancer.  The task of sorting through closets and drawers of sewing and needlework stash fell to me.  As I looked at my hands, I began to see their hands.  As I grieved, needle, thread and fabric soothed my soul.  A spark was rekindled and sewing became my passion.  It opened a new world of riches, took me across the country to schools and classes, and filled my life with the dearest friends.

The love between a mother and daughter, or a grandmother and granddaughter, is timeless.  So is the love of needle and thread, and the art of embroidery, heirloom sewing and smocking.  It is my hope that BessieMary will help to spread the love, the legacy and the art of embroidery, heirloom sewing and smocking.

To Bessie and Mary, I love you this much and more.
